You can see the way the brambling's head changes colour from grey to black in the run up to the breeding season. The feathers have pale tips that wear away during the winter to reveal the black beneath.
Bramblings breed among redwings and fieldfares in Scandinavian woodland, so I guess they will be gone soon. They were still around on the 19th.
